The first cycle of practice for 10 fruit cutters was realized

In cooperation with the School for Primary Education of Adults Dositej Obradović (SPEA) from Leskovac and with the support of experts from the Agricultural Advisory Service of Leskovac, the practical knowledge of 10 socially and materially disadvantaged participants of SPEA from Leskovac, Lebane, Bojnik, Vlasotince and Gredelica, in the south of Serbia, was improved.

The first cycle of practice is dedicated to winter and sanitary pruning of pears, which is very common in the Jablanica district, both among small and large plantation producers and potential employers. The full-day internship was realized with respect for occupational safety measures and the rights of interns based on seasonal work.

The internship was designed based on the interests of the students of the SPEA, who are suited to the seasonal nature of agricultural work. The implementation of the practice was preceded by a survey of the needs of 350 students of SPEA, who, according to the national structure, are 98-99% Roma, of which 65% are Roma women. The elementary illiterate students of SPEA, older than 18 years, together with their family members statistically make up 20% of the multiple vulnerable population within the general population of Roma in the south of Serbia. Over 80% of students have a positive experience from seasonal work in agriculture, of which 82% stated that they want to work more and train for better-paid occupations.

The internship was implemented within the broader plan of „Cooperative teaching“, which envisages the improvement of the current teaching content in SPEA with the support of partners from the agribusiness sector, with the aim of improving the employability of students in agriculture and related activities. In this regard, the practice was attended by professional employees and teachers who, within the framework of 3 teaching subjects, olready apply informative films and implement basic practice with guest lecturers – employers from the agribusiness sector.

We would like to thank the SPEA Dositej Obradović collective and the experts from the Agricultural Advisory Service of Leskovac, for the successfully completed activity.

The project team especially thanks the company „Poljo-Diskont“ Doljevac, for the donation of tools and protective equipment for the realization of the practice. The tools and protective equipment used during the practice, after its completion were donated to successful practitioners.

Cooperative teaching and practice are an integral part of the activities implemented by the Associaton Kamenica within the project „Economic inclusion of Roma and other marginalized groups in rural southern Serbia“, in partnership with the initiative for Roma entrepreneurship REDI and with the support of the Swiss organization HEKS-EPER.
